My Piano Philosophy

My BFF’s Piano Lessons

It was an average Saturday afternoon for two 7 year olds and I was going to have a playdate and sleep over with my BFF! Another thing that happened on weekends at her house was her piano lessons. So no problem, I’d just wait that out up in her room. From down in the living room, I could hear classical music playing ,but then a woman raised her voice and I heard a loud noise, like someone was hammering or something. So I crept downstairs and looked through the banister. This teacher was berating my poor BFF and slapping her on the wrist with a ruler when she’d make a mistake. It looked painful, and definitely not fun! So when my grandma asked me if I’d like to take formal lessons, if that was how it was going to be, I said “pass!”  Eventually my BFF quit her lessons and moved on to other (most likely less painful) things, yet my desire to learn increased, but we did not get a recommendation for that teacher for sure.

My grandma Mimi found me a wonderful man named Guy Holtz in Studio City ,CA . He was an amazing pianist and a wonderful teacher, taught me so very much and I studied with him for 12 years! No rulers involved…

I became a pretty good pianist, and a better songwriter, but I never knew I’d add teacher to that list. I found out 3 things about my self:

1)I learned A LOT about music and love to share information

2)I found out I am a good communicator

3) I’m a patient person

So I became a teacher, and have been one for over 30+ years now. I really enjoy enlightening my students with concepts and new ideas, and I am flexible and cater my teaching to what the student is interested in, and I really don’t teach any 2 students exactly the same. I figure out what’s the best method for their needs.

Some people are ear learners, they hear it once and can play it, some are visual learners, they take to reading music easily, some are physical learners, their fingers seem to glide over the keys with not much effort, some are mental learners, they grasp concepts and application of music theory and systems of harmony and then there’s the struggle of perseverance when those components are not happening, of trying to climb to the top of the musical mountain, and that’s where the patience, the cheerleading, the championing come in. It makes me so happy to see when a student makes progress. Could be baby steps, could be giant steps, any step is a great step ahead.

I really enjoy giving recitals and having all these students come together and play.

Sure it’s a little bit scary, nerve-racking , but also exciting. I never pressure anyone to do them. It’s how they feel, their decision. I will always encourage effort.

I once heard someone say “Run to what you fear, because on the other side is what you want”  And I believe that!
