MAKING LOVE BY THE LETTER (1987)

(Robin Randall & Steve Zell)

This is just a way fun song we worked on, so catchy and cool. I just remember smiling a lot while we were doing it. This is the geographically undesirable theme, long distance doesn’t work!

MIDNIGHT DON’T COME EASY (1995)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, James Butler)

James showed us a musical idea that was a verse. We built the song from there. The lyrical theme is midnight is the toughest time to get through when you’ve got a broken heart! It’s got a piano riff introduction and begins with the Chorus.

MISS MISERY (2016)

(Emerald, Robin Randall & Bill LaFleur)

This song was the unintended inspiration of that day when Emerald came over and was extremely upset about this co-worker treating her very poorly and thus this song was born! This person was very

territorial with her, and would not let anyone into her circle. Emerald was so confused as to what she could’ve done to this person and came to my house to vent, but then the song was born. Bill came up with this very rhythmic, catchy production underneath a gang-vocal “call and response” chorus.

MOMENT IN THE SUN (2004)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

We wrote this song as an Olympic type theme song, but it never got used. The anthemic quality and the power ballad essence of it is totally captured by Leo Unnermark and Parker Halub in their self produced version of this song.

MOTHER NIGHT (version 2 & 3) (1989)

(Judithe Randall & Robert Tepper)

If film noir was a rock song, it be this one. In the dark underbelly of the night, things look a lot different.

This song creates a mysterious yet powerful ambience in the music  surrounding longing and desire in the lyrics and a perfect marriage of the two.

MY LAST WISH (2014)

(Sopa Whyte, Robin Randall, Bill LaFleur)

Sopa’s first song she wrote. She was a tween, and full of angst yet hope, questions and dreams. We were supposed to be doing piano lessons, but the chords she learned immediately began lending themselves as the backdrop to her tales of unrequited love ripped from pages of her diary. I helped to encourage her to speak her mind, be unafraid to tell the world, to document this time in her life in song and inspiration. She blossomed as a songwriter in a breathtaking way. Bill came on board as her musical producer and arranger to support her Indie Singer-Songwriter vibe and Robert Tepper as her vocal producer. We did a trilogy of songs together and I am proud of them and her.

NEVER ALONE (1994)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, James & Ember Butler)

This gospel infused rock ballad started out as a poem by Ember Butler and an Irish Ballad by James Butler. Judithe and I came in on this tune and put our lyrical and musical spin on it, so it became a group collaboration. Both Marcie and Aina give amazing performances that give me the goosebumps every time I listen! Guy Marshall’s  production is both beautiful and sublime at the same time.

NEVER BE A NEXT TIME  (1990)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Mark Baker)

I don’t remember how we met Mark Baker, it most likely was through Marcie and her band

Signal, as Mark was writing with them. I remember Mark really liking “The Last Time” and wanted us to write a song with him that would be like a “sister” song to that. I think we wrote a very good song together!

NO PLACE I’D RATHER BE (2006)

(Robin Randall & Bill LaFleur)

This song started out as a kid’s theme song project and that did not work out, but with a new lyric slant, it became this catchy little pop song that you could call an “earworm” and that would be about right! I love the throwback Jackson 5 meets America 70’s vibe created in this track that Al Coda produced. It’s impossible not to hum!

ONE CAN ONLY HOPE (2012)

(Robin Randall, Bill LaFleur)

I sat on this lyric a long time, before doing something with it. When my son was small and being a single working mom, the days were long and nights longer and in watching a rerun of the show “ER“ I got the title from one of the old episodes. Getting through ordinary days, being thankful, feeling uncertain of the future, counting my blessings, all went into this lyric. The music wrote itself. I had a musical bridge I liked, but no words; Bill came on to contribute the sentiment, which fit perfectly and he created a  great yet simple track of flawless guitar parts to Dean’s heartfelt vocal. This song runs deep for me.

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Tony Sciuto)

The person you are falling in love with you know is falling too, but they’ve been hurt before and are afraid to be again, so you tell them it’ll be alright, just have trust, take it “one heartbeat at a time!” Another song from Judithe, Tony and I which has this moody, dark verse and opens up to this big positive chorus which reflects the song’s message and again, all versions we did have their strengths to them.

PAPER MOON SKY (2015)

(Emerald, Robin Randall, Bill LaFleur)

This was the very first song Emerald ever wrote. She had a writing assignment to pick an object to write about and let it speak to you. She saw a picture from her wedding album of her and her husband sitting on a paper moon, and from that she got the idea. Emerald came up with the chord progression to start with. I helped to change the key and expand on the harmony and Bill built the track around that.

SAY IT LIKE YOU MEAN IT (2008)

(Robin Randall, Bill LaFleur)

This song started with a clothing ad I got in an email, subject line “Say It Like You Mean It”, which has nothing to do with clothing or fashion, but I thought it would make a good title. I gave it to Bill who happened to be watching a film called “The Mephisto Waltz” and got a lyric inspiration from that. The music came pretty quick after, and I showed it to Bill and we both worked it out at the piano. Song Meaning: Actions speak louder than words.

It was picked by the Starship to record with Keith Olsen, but ended up not making the album. This song is AOR Classic rock. Another fav modulation into a chorus! Lyrically it’s one of those make it or break it moments when you know it’s over, but the chemistry is still there.

SOMEBODY’S BABY (2016)

(Emerald, Robin Randall, Bill LaFleur)

The theme of the week from a class Emerald took was to write a love song. She dove into her past to find inspiration. She relived her anger and things she could never say to a “long-over relationship”. Even years after being apart she felt like someone was “poking the bear”. Then we sat at the piano and pounded out the music, and Bill came on to do the production which is a latin-dance, “Britney” vibe.

SO CLOSE, YET SO FAR (1988)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

Judithe wrote this lyric of a tumultuous yet passionate relationship and I wrote the music to it. I remember I had just bought an MSQ sequencer from Jeff Silverman and wanted to use it on this track. Tommy and I programmed the whole song and when we got to Kingsound it was gone, vanished! I guess I did not read the instructions too well. Oh well, we had to reprogram the entire song in the studio, took a couple hours or more before Paul was to be there, but in the end it came out alright. We got it done, got all the overdubs and it’s one of those sessions you’ll always remember for that.

SOMEDAY YOU”LL COME RUNNING (1988)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Tony Sciuto)

I think this song turned out really well and has been covered by several bands. Tony and I shared a mutual choice to do a rather shocking yet cool modulation into the chorus and I have always loved that we did that. The lyric talks about the singer having that unwavering belief that love will come back to you when that person realizes how much they love you. We all want the “Hollywood ending”, don’t we?

Judithe’s line, ”When it’s a prison being free” sums it up.

STATE OF LOVE (1987)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Tony Sciuto)

This song existed in a previous form as Judithe and Tony wrote their own version of it and then for some reason I can’t remember, I came on it, and wrote new music for which Tony chimed in and here we are. This was the 1st collaboration of many successful songs that were written. When Tony came to town from the East Coast, I was always excited because I knew a good song was going to be created! I liked the idea Judithe and Tony had about moving into a new state of love, like you are moving to a new place.

STILL THE SAME INSIDE (2010)

(Robin Randall & Bill LaFleur)

I got a call from my good friend Greg Debonne who was music supervising a new MTV reality show that was looking for a theme song. We came close, but ultimately the shows production went with something else. Still, I am always thankful for these opportunities because no matter what, a new song can be born! Bill and I went to work on this TV theme song about self transformation and learning to love a “new you” but knowing you are “still the same inside.” Michelle lent her pop rock sensibilities to the vocals and a catchy pop song then was born.

STRANGER AMONG US (1988)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Tony Sciuto)

I had gone to Ojai with my friend Denise for a girls’ getaway weekend. We went into this used bookstore and I always like the X Files type section. I grabbed a book that said “There’s A Stranger Among Us” and boom, the idea of the song was planted in my brain! It was not going to be about UFOs though, the plot is someone is cheating on you. Judithe and Tony liked the concept and we ran with it. That’s why the sort of alien sounds in the beginning of that track, a sort of wink-wink to the real meaning.

THE LAST TIME (1985)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Jeff Law)

One of our most iconic and famous songs, it went through a lot of changes before it was in the form of what everyone knows it to be. The first working title by Jeff was ‘Flashback”  and he had the verse melody. For the chorus, Jeff said, “Why don’t we try an octave type Tears For Fears thing?” I jumped the octave and then the whole chorus rolled out of my fingers on the piano all at once, it just came out. Then I gave the music and the rough lyrics to Judithe and 3 days later, there was The Last Time. We had a different bridge though, it was much later. Steve Zell even demoed the original bridge. Then the new bridge happened! We decided to go very rhythmic with a Chicago type vibe to it. I remember thinking this timing is strange and took it to my former piano teacher and he said, this is odd time, like 4/4 to 5/4 or you could say 9/4. I was like,”What?” We kept it! This recording session was magical and perfect. All the musicians had gone with us to Dick Grove School of Music, they were all French Canadian and were all talking in French for most of it! Claude led the gang through a most productive day. The lyrics are about when you know a relationship has run its course, but there is still chemistry there. The last time can be the best time before goodbye.

THOSE DAYS IN THE 1970s (2005)

(Robin Randall)

I grew up in the heart of Hollywood. The Hollyridge Home housed my family for 65 years.

In my teenage years my friends and I spent evenings cruising those hills, and hanging out on Hollywood Blvd, shopping, record store hopping (remember those?) grab an ice cream at Swenson’s (there was no Starbucks guys!) or catch a movie at one of the many theaters on the Blvd (yeah, we called it “The Blvd” and no malls or triplexes!). One day I was driving down the Blvd on my way to my job at Musicians Institute and I started to visualize how it used to be and the song I’d yet to write started playing in my head. It is an ode to a time gone by, a chapter in my life. My former MI student, Camilla Gervide, clearly one of the best students at MI ever, agreed to sing it for me. From Sweden and very talented, she lent her vocals to this Eagles inspired track produced by Bill LaFleur with Kevin Campos lending his “Eagles-ish  BG vocals to the 1970’s vibe. Imagine when Led Zeppelin was actually “new” on the radio, pretty damn groovy, dude!

TOMORROW DOESN’T MATTER TONIGHT (1985)

(Robin Randall & Steven Cristol)

My most successful song in my career. Steven and I had met each other at Dick Grove School of Music. We decided we should write a song together. I remember the working title Steven had was “Paranoia”. When I got that chorus melody, I think that inspired him to change it to what we now know as “Tomorrow Doesn’t Matter Tonight”. We recorded it at Kingsound produced by fellow Dick Grover, Claude Gaudette.

In 1985 Starship, having just shortened the band’s name from Jefferson Starship, needed one more single to complete their “Knee Deep in the Hoopla” album. Producer Dennis Lambert called a special meeting of songwriters that was put together by the Los Angeles Songwriters Showcase and ASCAP. Eight ASCAP writers who had had at least one major-label artist cover were invited. One of those writers was Steven Cristol, who had written the title cut on Harry Belafonte’s most recent album at the time. When Dennis heard “Tomorrow Doesn’t Matter Tonight,” he said “That’s a single!” After playing it for the band, he called a couple of days later to say that they would be cutting it. The song was the 3rd single on "Knee Deep In The Hoopla”, and the rest is history! We owe much thanks to the LASS founders, John Braheny and Len Chandler. The new 2021 version on this Anthology is a brand new huge production produced by Jeff Silverman built around Diana DeWitt’s pristine and powerful vocals.

TO THE MAX (1998) - (DUET) Steve Zell & Deb Rogers-Sobaszek

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

This was written for the Baywatch episode of the same name, “To The Max.” The character, Mitch’s love interest, believes, ”You gotta’ live life to the max!.. and name’s her horse “Max!” Judithe and I needed to write a duet representing Mitch and his love’s relationship, but also her beloved horse, whom Mitch needs to help out of a potentially dangerous situation.  We enlisted veteran Baywatch vocalist, Steve Zell and newcomer, Deb Rogers-Sobaszek, who indeed took their performance “To The Max!”. This is another awesome production by Guy Marshall. The writer of this episode of Baywatch, Deborah Schwartz, took the song to her real horse named “Max” and played the song for him. He whinnied in approval.

My Uncle Doug asked Judithe and I to write a song to which he and his wife, Debbie, could renew their marriage vows. Judithe wrote a beautiful touching lyric and I put that to music. Once again, Steve Zell and Deborah Rogers lent their amazing vocals to this epic duet. Guy Marshall outdid himself in this lush arrangement.

VENUS & MARS (1993)

(Robin Randall & Diana DeWitt)

This song is one of my favorites for many reasons. It was written on the shores of Brighton, England in a little cottage hotel. It was the end of the Gods of AOR tour and Diana and I would be flying home. Parting is such sweet sorrow. I had this little Casio keyboard with me. On that, we wrote this lovely song. Whenever I listen to it, I’m back on those shores. Parting ways with new friends we met there, not knowing if we’d ever meet up again. The song documents our life and times in those moments and the finality of going back to your ordinary world from such a magical trip. Guy Marshall produced this track as if he had been there with us, his instrumentation was spot on, and Diana’s vocal, the words, the melody’s lament, my voice-leading on the chorus progression, all come together to create our own special period-piece that lives on in the airwaves of our minds.

WHAT ABOUT THE CHILDREN (1990)

(Robin Randall & Nancy Krasn Gumbiner)

(From Nancy) “We Are The World” was a smash hit. The topic was hot, but it meant so much more to me, as it spoke to my concern for humanity. I really wanted to write a song about the future of our world, our children and how what we do today will affect them. “What About The Children” just flowed. I did not write the bridge until Robin gave me a melody for the song including a bridge: “This is a new dawning, let your voice echo in cries....open your eyes, open your eyes”. Sadly, not much progress has been made since both songs were written, decades ago. (From Robin) This  powerhouse track produced by Steve Hopkins is truly a Rock Anthem. Marcie Free really sings her heart out. A sonic masterpiece backset to an urgent plea for change.

WHAT HAPPENED TO LOVE (1990)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Marcie Free)

A summer romance turns to a bitter winter in this tale of lost love. The music is edgy in the verse, and brightens up on the modal interchange chorus. Marcie does another outstanding performance on this co-penned track.

WHEN THE HEARTACHE HITS YOU (1987)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Bennett Brandeis)

This moody, pulsing mid-tempo rock ballad is definitely from a heartbroken, resentful, and “wish my pain upon you” place. It’s feeling like you’re a fool to be misled and knowing the person can’t know how hurt you are till they feel that same heartbreak and loss. Marcie Free and Diana DeWitt both give great performances. I thank them for bringing the angst in the lyrics to fruition!

WHERE ARE YOU NOW (1990)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Juno Roxas)

We were put together with Juno Roxas to write a song. Juno came over from Australia to do many writing sessions. We knew Mushroom Records was looking for the “hit Single” and we definitely wanted to throw our hat in the ring. We met with Juno several times and the song "Where Are You Now” came out of this. We made a demo and, since Juno was so busy doing other sessions, Judithe and I proceeded to demo the song with James Christian doing the vocals, and Juno did his version later that week. Steve Hopkins produced this pop/rock ballad, and I kinda knew it was sounding like it could be a hit. Juno returned to Australia. We heard that they picked our song for the single. We were thrilled and it did really well on the charts.

The origin of the idea for the song is that Juno wanted the song to be about being away from home and missing someone. He wanted a ballad like Michael Bolton-ish. I played a common chord progression of one of his songs, and Juno said “Yeah, kinda like that.”

I was driving on the 134 Fwy towards Glendale to teach a music lesson and on the radio was an ad to “go see Nirvana at the Whiskey with an opening act comedian”…and then they said my boyfriend from high school’s name. I was like, is this the same person? Then the title came to me, “Where Are You Now”, and I started thinking about Hollywood High School and all that. Several lines came to me. I pulled over and wrote them down. When I got home, the melody for the Chorus and the 1st lines were there.

WHY CAN”T I EVER SAY NO (1985)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Steve Zell)

This song is about a person who is in love with someone who is involved with someone else and being strung along. The angst that comes with being in a triangle plays out in the song. It is a Pop Ballad sung with great emotion by Steve Zell.

WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME (2015)

(Sopa Whyte, Robin Randall, Bill LaFleur)

Sopa tells the story of regret and reverie in asking, “What if things turned out different?”.

Her fragile, smokey tone in the vocals cast against a moody yet pulsing track create a pleading ambience.

WISH ON THE WIND  (1993) - (DUET - Steve Zell & Diana DeWitt) - (Bonus Track)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, James Butler)

Slanted toward a folky-Americana vibe with a rootsy country ambience to it. This is a break-up song and also an ”I’ll be waiting for you when you finally figure out that I’m the one” song. I love where this goes musically on the bridge!
