A LOVE I'D DIE FOR (1988)

(Judithe Randall, Curt Cuomo)

Very much a Journey inspired song. I love the ascending chorus melody, culminating in the title.

Judithe's lyric is passionate, as always.

ALL RIVERS RUN TO THE SEA (1998)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

Inspired by a dream Judithe had, it was a very deep spiritual lyric that came to her. I wrote the music to her lyric. The song is in 6/8 time and is a ballad that has an anthemic yet mysterious and dark vibe to it. Both Ken and Aina did incredible heartfelt performances that to this day give me chills. The line “Pulling wings from my Angels and watching them bleed,” gets to me every time. Guy Marshall’s production draws you into Judithe’s lyrics’ spiritual reverie perfectly.

ALL THE LOVE YOUR HEART CAN HOLD (2001)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Diana DeWitt)

This was the last lyric Judithe wrote before she passed away. She wanted to dedicate it to Diana

DeWitt’s mother who was very ill with Cancer. She also wanted Diana to write it with us. I had taken her lyric and written the verse and chorus music and we left the bridge to Diana to do. Diana sadly lost her mom shortly thereafter, and Judithe herself passed away before she could hear it recorded. Some time  went by, and eventually we recorded the song as a piano vocal. Later on, Bill LaFleur heard the song and produced a track for it. We went to Jeff Silverman to record more parts, vocals and background vocals there. The song is obviously a very special song to me and Diana. It was in the 2007 American Idol Finalist Song Writing Contest for the Coronation song. It did not win, but it was exciting to be in the

finals!

AMNESTY  (1988)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Soorya Townley)

This song was written for Amnesty International, but never used. Soorya came to us with the idea of doing it. She was associated at the time with A&M Records and that’s where we recorded it. The song is in F# minor and modal interchanges on the Chorus to F# major which makes it sound uplifting, then it goes into D flat (or C# if you’d like).  Not really sure what my thinking was or why I did that, but my ear led me there! Diana’s performance carries much conviction and aspiration to the words. I love the beautiful harmonies!

ANYTHING LESS THAN LOVE (2006)

(Robin Randall & Bill LaFleur)

This song is about not being able to have the relationship you want with someone, but not wanting to settle for less and the struggle of accepting that. It’s in 6/8 time with a moody swing feel and Sarah’s vocals have this cool, smooth clear tone to them, yet delivers the angst of the lyrical message of the song.

BAD GIRL (1987) - (Bonus Track)

(Judithe Randall, Curt Cuomo)

Judithe wrote this lyric about a girl who is definitely nobody's fool. Diana delivered a killer vocal, reminiscent of Ann Wilson meets Joan Jett. This track hits the ground running and never looks back.

BEAUTIFUL IS LONELY (1985)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Claude Gaudette)

The song was inspired by the actress Genie Francis. Judithe, Mimi and I were General Hospital fans and when Luke & Laura were to be married in1981, I remember watching Genie on a talk show before the grand wedding episode. They said something like, “How does it feel to be the most beautiful bride in the world?” She said, “I work so much, my life is pretty lonely.” And we thought about fame, and how it must be difficult to be so well known and how do you even go out on a date? Then the lyric came together. We wrote it first person, but when Pat Benatar put a hold on it, she asked to make it in 3rd person, to which we said “OK”. We heard she had done a recording of it, but ultimately did not choose to put it on her album at the time. Another artist that held it was Madonna, and again she did not do it. I had this riff on the piano, and showed it to Claude. He really liked it and built the arrangement around it. It goes from A minor to D minor and it is a bit of a strange kind of eery modulation sound, but works well with the lyrical tone. Claude’s arrangement was haunting and full of ambiance. Diana’s vocal brings that emotional plea of the lyric to life.

BEAUTY IN THE BEAST (Long & Short Version) (2000) - (Bonus Track)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

This song had been written as a theme song for the show “Sheena: Queen of the Jungle”,

Unreleased. In the end they decided not to use it. I call it Tribal pop because they wanted a “Lion King” type vibe. Guy Marshall really went to town with the instrumentation and actually had the chanting background vocals he chanted, translated into Swahili.

BETTER BELIEVE IN ME (1989)

(Robin Randall & Steve Zell)

At the time, both Judithe and Steve were really crushing on those Vampire books by Anne Rice and were obsessed with them. Meanwhile, I was really into Richard Marx’s album and was inspired by the grooves he had going on. I worked with Tommy to create this driving synth line and drum groove set against a Vampire’s tale told eloquently yet darkly by Steve. We worked on this whispery verse melody that soars into the Pre-Chorus, and then ends up with this chanty chorus. Tommy provided the exact feel we were wanting in the tracks. Diana sang the backgrounds. My fav Steve line,. “My love will leave a stain on you, turn away, pray I don’t see it through…” Back then, we never had a platform to self release songs, so this stayed unreleased till now!

BLESS A BRAND NEW ANGEL (1996)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

Probably one of the most profound songs we ever wrote, this one was far reaching and epic.

Written for a Baywatch episode where Lifeguard Stephanie loses her life in a boating accident to save a bunch of teenagers in a storm. The song gained much interest from the viewers who began requesting copies of it. Baywatch never released it audibly, but Hal Leonard Publishing had wanted to publish it as sheet music. The song had many requests for it to be played at memorial services for those who had lost a loved one and for those who loved songs about Angels. Actually, Parade magazine did an article on us and the song. Ironically, when Princess Diana died in that same year, David Hasselhoff sang it at her memorial concert. Diana DeWitt sang it with so much emotion, I think it was so fitting for the scene. There’s an alternate take somewhere, where she breaks down in tears. I wanted the song to lift on the Chorus so purposely chose to modulate, or rather change keys into the Chorus and with that, it really carried the song to the heavens sonically. Guy Marshall along with Claude Gaudette did a beautiful track. Ironically, Claude passed away suddenly at age 37 before it aired. He was dear to me, and in a very strange way, the words of the song reflected how I felt about him.

BREAKING THROUGH THE SILENCE (1986)

(Robin Randall & Steve Zell)

This song got a lot of buzz when we pitched it, but ultimately, it never got cut. The Starship was supposed to do it with Keith Olsen producing, but they pulled it last minute. James Christian did a demo of it too, but it never got released. Steve’s version here has a real anthemic quality to it, it’s always been a fav of mine! I think I was in a 38 Special meets The Outfield vibe going on in my musical brain at the time. The song is about taking someone for granted and feeling regret at the realization of not treating them as well as you could have.

CALL MY NAME (Circa 1990) - (Bonus Track)

(Robin Randall, Aina Olsen)

This tune is a “torch” song. Aina has that great sound and sings it that way.  Aina and I put a bluesy, cool melody over the chords I came up with. Aina, coming from Norway and being so far from LA, was thinking about how she lives across the world from her hometown and was missing her friends and family.  She also realized the time zones are now flipped for her. That’s where the lyric was derived from.

CAN’T KEEP THE WIND FROM BLOWING (1991)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Ron Wasserman)

This song was going to be a group project for Desert Storm, but the war ended before it could be released and the investor dropped out. There were a lot of very talented vocalists on this track. Listening to it now, I cannot believe we got all these wonderful voices and great personalities together in the same room to culminate into this anthemic rock ballad. It was like a “We Are The World” type thing.

Judithe wanted to name the group “Peace Core”

Solo Vocals - In order of performance and some sing more than once: Ronee Martin, Marcie Free, James Christian, John Francis, Aina Olsen, Kelly Keagy, Diana DeWitt, Steve Zell, Lorraine Lewis, Robert Tepper, Kathy Fisher and a choir of 20 something voices!

THE CHILD INSIDE (1993)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

Written for a Baywatch episode of the same name, the theme revolves around the Special Olympics with guest star Mary Lou Retton as the kids’ mentor. It’s a song telling you to hold your head up high, have strength and courage. Favorite Judithe Line, “Learn to laugh at what you run from!”

CLOSE MY EYES (1985)

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

Judithe wrote a devastatingly, sad lyric about letting go of someone you cannot have anymore - and knowing you must face reality. She wrote the lyric first and I put it to music. I don’t even remember writing those modulations, it just came out that way, but figuring out the chords leading up to the chorus was tricky, yet I like challenging myself. This is just a piano/vocal and Steve sang his heart out and gave his all, as usual.

CLOSE MY EYES (1985) (DUET) - Steve Zell & Diana DeWitt

(Robin & Judithe Randall)

When film director Gary Youngman, the son of Henny Youngman, whom my grandfather wrote jokes for, approached Judithe and I to write a theme song for his film, “Dead As A Doorman”  starring Bradley Whitford, we gladly said yes! We had this great ballad we recently had written, but it was very negative and sad lyrically talking about the ending of love. Judithe didn’t think she could change it, but using the same exact music, did a complete reversal in lyrics as the song needed to be about love found. It worked! I ended up having to make the song a lot longer for the end credits and Claude was scoring the film so we merged his score into the Intro of the song. He did an absolutely beautiful arrangement to it. There are a lot of modulations and interludes to it, and it makes for an interesting musical journey through the song.

COIN CITY LAUNDERETTE (1986)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Robbie Gillman)

This lyric of Judithe’s harked back to the 1970s when she had the initial idea. Before the times of online dating and swiping right, this is the story of a guy who looks everywhere to find the love of his life, only to meet her at the neighborhood launderette! It totally spoke country to me musically. My former Dick Grove instructor, Robbie Gillman, who was an amazing piano player and a successful songwriter, co-wrote it with us. It has that Huey Lewis signature shuffle vibe to it. I love Huey Lewis! Also, Eagles

influenced, so it’s Calif country rock in a way.

COMEDY OF TIME (1996)

(Robin & Judithe Randall, Aina Olsen)

Aina was helping me clean out and organize our storage room at Hollyridge which was a strangely built room that snaked behind the kitchen and living room of the house and ended up in a rather a spooky crawlspace. We found an old trunk which hadn’t been opened in decades and found it contained old files and film reels. Judithe had written this poem, we found, back in the 60s, and we put music to it and surprised her!

COMING BACK FOR MORE (1990)

(Nancy Krasn Gumbiner & Robin Randall)

(From Nancy) I remember as if it happened yesterday. Robin and I were chatting and Robin was sharing her relationship woes with me which I prefer to woe is me – ha! I was sitting on my bed and when Robin and I ended the call, I wrote the lyric “Coming Back For More”.

(From Robin) Thank you Nancy for the gift of this lyric! The music came pretty easily to this.  A solid, now classic Pop/ Rock Ballad that Marcie Free sang flawlessly. Ron Wasserman’s track works really nice too!

Inspired by watching a TV show called Flashpoint, this guy was talking about his ex who wanted to get back together after forgetting she treated him badly. It’s pop rock in an Avril Lavigne style. DIDN’T HAVE TO END THIS WAY (2006)

(Robin Randall & Sarah Olson)

Sarah had been a songwriting student of mine; she was a very talented singer/songwriter/guitarist. We stayed in touch after she went on to tour college towns across the US. I’d been working on this song for awhile, had the 1st verse and chorus, but was stuck on the 2nd verse lyric. So I asked her to collaborate on it. It’s a song about what if things ended differently.
